The Jewish community in Florence: its places, its history and its traditions

The history of the Jews in Florence is very long and intricate. Under the second branch of the Medici family, the Ghetto was created and after three hundred years it was destroyed. In those same years the magnificent nineteenth-century Synagogue was built, thanks to the Emancipation period.

  • The Ponte Vecchio, a global icon of medieval architecture, perfectly intact with the goldsmiths' shops and the Vasari Corridor above it.
  • The Baptistery of Florence with the glorious Gates of Paradise, a Renaissance work cast in bronze by the artist Lorenzo Ghiberti, a contemporary sculptor of Donatello.
  • The Synagogue, a 19th-century building unique in its Moorish style, with its sparkling green copper dome that makes the difference in the purely medieval and Renaissance skyline of the city
